The fluid and mutable interactions of Charlie Sheard’s intensely coloured washes of paint result in an array of remarkably poised and majestically scaled paintings.
These works might seem to coalesce accidentally, coming together all at once, but in fact are the result of intense deliberation, extraordinary presence of mind and an acute eye for composition. Some of them have taken many years to reach their definitive form.
The sophistication of Sheard’s work, which draws broadly on the heritage of surrealist abstraction, romanticism, symbolism, abstract expressionism and the esoteric “thought forms” of the Theosophists, converges in a sizzlingly upbeat and contemporary idiom.
This survey of Sheard’s recent work, all produced during the last decade, represents a major achievement, and attests to the coming of age of a virtuosic and intrepidly lyrical artist.
This exhibition is curated by Terence Maloon.
