Whether it’s working off those extra hot chocolates or embracing the warmer weather, Canberra is the perfect place to get active this spring. From world class sporting events to opportunities to get out and explore the great outdoors, Canberra has it all.
If witnessing the world’s best battle it out across different codes doesn’t get you motivated, we’re not sure what will. The Rugby League World Cup comes to town from 29 October – 10 November. See France take on Lebanon on 29 October before Australia hosts France on the 3 November. 10 November will be your final opportunity to catch some World Cup action when Fiji and Italy meet at Canberra Stadium.
That’s not all the international sport you can look forward to during the spring months. Australia and Argentina’s Rugby Union teams will meet for a test match on 16 September. And we know that 30 August is technically still winter, but when the Australian Diamonds meet the South African Proteas on the court at AIS Arena, we’re sure you’ll feel the warmth coming off these outstanding players.
Getting out and exploring the great outdoors is a wonderful way to recharge the body and mind, and what better place to do so than the bush capital. Get up close and personal with Australia’s friendly natural wildlife at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, a 45-minute drive from Canberra. Or for you Insta-fanatics out there, explore popular natural beauty spots like Namadgi National Park, Gibraltar Falls and Booroomba Rocks (be sure to use #VisitCanberra for an opportunity to be featured on our social media channels).
Want to keep your explorations a little more central? Make like the locals do by exercising around the lake. Walk the two-bridges (Commonwealth Avenue to Kings Avenue loop), take part in a stand-up paddle boarding yoga class or segway your way around the lake with SegGlideRide.
Feel more accountable to work on your fitness when you know you’ve got an event to participate in coming up? You’re in luck. The “mindfulness triathlon” Wanderlust 108 returns on 21 October to Patrick White Lawns. Participants will engage in three mindful activities – running, yoga and meditation – all against the stunning backdrop of Lake Burley Griffin.
Wanting to put the “fun” back into “Fun Run”? The Canberra Times Fun Run takes over Canberra on 3 September - head around Lake Burley Griffin, through Canberra's iconic streets, and finish up lakeside on picturesque Rond Terrace.
