One of the highlights of the Canberra region's foodie calendar, the Murrumbateman Moving Feast, returns in 2017.
Over one delicious long weekend, from 30 September until Monday 2 October, the makers of Murrumbateman and the surrounds will come together to create a food crawl like no other.
If you’ve been living under a vino-deprived rock, Murrumbateman is famed as one of Canberra’s best cool climate wine spots, boasting such vineyards as Granitevale Estate, Long Rail Gully, Vintner’s Daughter and more than 15 others.
With all these boutique wineries existing in one region, it’s only natural that a food festival would emerge to bring all the fine drops together with local produce. That festival is the Murrumbateman Moving Feast and this year, 18 wineries and eateries will take part in the festivities.
Each participating winery or eatery serves up an entrée sized main or dessert (or both!) which you can purchase for $25 and $20 respectively. The smaller size allows you to sample as many dishes as possible without feeling too full and each dish will be perfectly matched to a local wine as part of the price. Want more? You’ll also get to take home all the Riedel wine glasses you collect at the end of the weekend, valued at $20 each.
While the food and wine festivities take centre stage over the weekend, Monday 2 October (a public holiday) is all about the music. ‘Music Monday’ will see a selection of cellar doors hosting talent from all genres for Labour Day. It’s a chance to kick back with a tasting glass or two of local drops while soaking up some of Canberra’s best musical acts. Find the full list of venues here.
Here's what we can't wait to taste...
Pull up a chair for hearty fair from Helm with both Bratwurst or beef sausage served with sauerkraut, mustard and relish on the menu. Both dishes will be prepared by Chef Paul Butler from “Chef at Home” and will be paired with Riesling or Cabernet Sauvignon.
For dessert, Fresh strawberries in butterscotch schnapps and fresh cream, anyone? Or perhaps you’d prefer Poached Corella Pear with honeyed ricotta, pistachio nuts and salted caramel? Both dishes will be matched with Helm’s famous Half Dry Riesling, and if you’re lucky, the lovely Ken Helm, founder and vintner will tell you the tale of how Helm came to be.
Chef Shane Johnson from Onred Restaurant will be serving up Gundagai Cabernet braised venison in a wild mushroom risotto matched with Eden Road’s Gundagai Cabernet Sauvignon. Or, if you’d like something on the lighter side, there will be cured white fish with fennel and orange salad dressed with mirin and lime available too.
Check out Shaw’s new restaurant – Olleyville – and take your seat for seared Humpty Doo barramundi, prawn, chive, bacon and caramelised onion mash with wilted margal greens and lemon aspen berrueblanc. Stay a little longer for Vanilla pavlova with lemon curd, fossilised fruits and forest berry compote matched with a glass of their Vineyard Estate Ricato.
Sample a Granitevale drop of your choice when you swing by for some slow cooked lamb shanks in a delicious mild curry sauce with rice and side dishes.
Alternatively, save the trip for dessert when you can indulge in Italian Trifle – a layering of marscapone, limoncello, figs, toasted hazelnuts, cream and dark chocolate. Yum. Matched with a wine of your choosing, naturally.
Fancy a touch of the Orient on your tastebuds? The Vintner’s Daughter will be serving up Korean Bao sliders with BBQ pork, gochujang mayo, kimchi and green onions matched with their 2015 Pinot Noir in collaboration with Mana Catering Solutions.
Long Rail Gully is the place to be for lovers of the low and slow way of cooking. They’re whole marinating beef fillets for 24 hours in their Long Rail Gully Shiraz with thyme and garlic before slow cooking the fillets in their Yoder Smoker and serving them up with roasted chat potatoes and a Long Rail Gully Shiraz jus. If you hadn’t had enough Shiraz at this point, the meal will also be accompanied by a glass of it.
Nothing says ‘weekend foodie getaway’ better than artisanal handmade chocolates. During the Moving Feast at Robyn Rowe you can sample their Chocolate Date Meringue Torte, Sticky Toffee Pudding served with warm butterscotch sauce or Chocolate Marshmallow Tart. All desserts will be served with luxurious homemade ice cream or whipped cream and even hot chocolate drinks. Can it really get any better than that?
