Cellar Door is a weekly wine and produce market set in the iconic Nishi Grand Stair at NewActon. A combined effort between the precinct and Canberra District Wine Association, the market brings together a rotating roster of Canberra region wineries and distilleries, local artisans and producers every Saturday afternoon from 3-6pm. Buy a tasting glass to try all the drops, grab a few bottles at cellar door prices, and marvel at the region’s burgeoning wine scene.
One of the market’s organisers, Michael Liu, shares his five favourite bottles for summertime.
“From the moment the cap comes off this delicious bubbly, it’s an effervescent joy from start to finish. Crisp, fresh and perfect in the warmer months, the Petillant Naturel (natural sparkling) method really brings out the best in these Savagin grapes. Best enjoyed in the sun.”
“Say ‘ciao!’ when you knock this one back – Pankhurst Wines has created a great wine with this Italian grape. For a recommended pairing, try it with a holiday grazing platter…think cold cuts, gooey cheeses, fruits and nuts.”
“This is the sort of wine that you can’t lose with when you’re headed to the dinner party. A real people-pleaser, it’ll even have the most hardened rosé opponents converted. Beautifully well balanced flavour with a gorgeous colour. Too good to share? Perhaps…”
“If sticky is on the agenda, look no further than this sweet gem. It’s easy to taste the many years of maturation which have culminated in this complex flavour profile. Bring it out at dessert time and watch as everyone suddenly makes room for ‘just a bit more’ (after previously declaring how full they are!)”
“How do you make an already delicious spirit even better? Add cold brew coffee from locals Bellerophon Coffee, of course. There’s hints of nuts and chocolate in this unique infusion. As for delivery, an espresso martini is a no-brainer (or add a dash in your morning coffee…)”
