Four e-scooter dates around Lake Burley Griffin

Four e-scooter dates around Lake Burley Griffin

This year, couples new and old are speed dating. No, they’re not assessing potential matches in three-minutes or less, they’re embracing the wind in their hair, taking cute selfies in matching helmets and embarking on e-scooter dates around Lake Burley Griffin.

There’s always a colourful e-scooter or two near the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre at Regatta Point making it the perfect starting point for your two-wheeled adventure. Hire a black Visit CBR e-scooter from the visitors centre for $15 for one hour or $25 for two hours, or choose between Neuron’s orange scooters and Beam’s purple scooters.

Start your date off on the right foot by scooting into the sunset or take inspiration from one of these date ideas.

  1. Tick off the classic bridge-to-bridge loop

Do as the locals do and take a leisurely cruise on the bridge-to-bridge loop. Marvel at the grandeur of the Captain Cook Memorial Jet and international flag display as you follow the lake’s edge. You’ll also pass by popular attractions including Questacon, the National Library of Australia, the National Portrait Gallery and more.

Be sure to stop at the National Gallery of Australia’s Sculpture Garden, a speedy eight-minute ride over the lake. Showcasing 26 masterpieces made by Australian and International artists, this sculpture garden is home to a surreal fog sculpture that blankets the garden in mist from 12:30pm to 2pm daily.

  2. Be inspired by the experts at Jerrabomberra Wetlands

Scoot your way to Jerrabomberra Wetlands, a 20-minute cruise around Lake Burley Griffin from Regatta Point, to listen to the sweet calls of 170 migratory birds that thrive here. Did you know birds are experts in love, with 70% of birds forming long term bonds with their feathered soul mate?

On route pop into the Kingston Foreshore to gather your picnic snack essentials or pre-order one of the Canberra Picnic Company luxurious packs for a sumptuous summer al fresco date.

  3. Play a game of Disc Golf in Weston Park

Pack your frisbee because you’ll be zooming towards Weston Park’s Disc Golf course. A 20-minute ride will see you gliding over Commonwealth Avenue Bridge, taking in the sweeping lake views, and soaking up the serenity of Lennox Garden.

The perfect lunchtime pit stop is Yarralumla Kebabs. Some e-scooters even have a very useful kebab holder, also known as a water bottle holder.

  4. Track down an ever moving, pop-up bar

The Pop Inn is famous for popping up in new locations each weekend. This moving wine bar serves great local cool-climate drops and often partners with pizza connoisseurs for the perfect afternoon combo.

A girl on a scooter in front of the National Carillon in Canberra.
Hire a scooter from the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre for $15 a hour or $25 for two hours.

Often seen serving up delicious drinks at Bowen Park, Constitution Place and the National Carillon – all within a 10-minute ride – track down The Pop Inn before enjoying a gentle stroll back to your starting point.

Be forewarned, these date ideas are sure to make your loved one smile, but these scooters do have one design flaw when it comes to ensuring peak romantic vibes. Their right-handed acceleration design makes holding hands not impossible but definitely challenging for even the most advanced scooting champs.

Starting your date at the Canberra and Regions Visitor Centre has great perks including free parking on weekends, access to maps, and friendly staff who have great tips. You can even pick up an end-of-date memento from their store full of locally crafted goodies.
