Brodburger, Kingston Foreshore

Brodburger started life in an old red gypsy caravan pumping out flame grilled burgers to locals. It got so popular with burger lovers of all ages that Brodburger moved next door into the historic Glassworks building. Brodburgers are not for the faint hearted! These hearty meals are always cooked fresh, with the A-grade premium mince beef, chicken and fish flame grilled to your liking. But most of the burgers can be made in a Baby Size for your little ones.

Dickson Dumpling House, Dickson

There’s something about parcelled-up snacks that really appeals to the little ones – probably because they can eat them with their fingers. They’re a winner with adults, too, at this bustling diner. Order share plates of pan-fried pork dumplings, steamed vegetable dumplings, duck pancakes and spring rolls for a fun and filling feast.

Kusina, Weston

It stands to reason – for the best family meals, go to family establishments. Kusina is Filipino, inviting you to eat from banana leaves or tuck in with your fingers and simply enjoy the spring rolls, prawn fritters, grilled dishes and interesting salads. The best part? From 5pm to 7pm, Tuesday to Sunday, kids aged 8 and younger can eat from a special menu for free.

Tommy & Me, Macgregor

Tommy & Me offer a play area, edible kids’ craft sessions (what kid wouldn’t have fun making fruit kebabs and ‘bear paws’?) and menus for breakfast and lunch that will please the grown-ups, too. There are tasty café staples such as burgers and nachos, a decent-sized kids’ menu and great milkshakes.

Urban Pantry, Griffith

Look out over the Manuka Lawns while the sun shines and the kids scamper about at Urban Pantry, an ultra mod café with a relaxed vibe. It’s an all-day affair with an amazing breakfast menu (brioche French toast and smoked trout tortillas) and great seasonal flavours served into the night.

La Cantina, Narrabundah

You feel like you’re dining in a wine cellar at La Cantina, a popular spot where you can order pizza or pasta (the likes of house-made pappardelle with mixed forest mushrooms) or settle in for Italian classics such as parmesan-crumbed veal rib eye or roast spatchcock with lemon and chilli vinaigrette.

Indo Cafe, City

In the heart of Canberra, Indo Cafe serves a winning laksa and classic Indonesian dishes, such as rendang curry, satay chicken and nasi goreng, to the hungry masses. On a sunny day, grab a takeaway lunch box and head to nearby Glebe Park. Closed weekends.
