The country way of life

Canberra is the perfect base for exploring the rural charms just beyond the borders of the Australian Capital Territory. Jump in the car and get set for the perfect experience just for you; whether you prefer to relish the country tranquillity, or you like your holidays with a little bit more action.

Be welcomed by locals when visiting their award-winning restaurants and cellar doors and experience life as they live it. Try gourmet pizza in Gundaroo, handmade chocolates, or taste cool climate wines in Murrumbateman.

Visit retail stores and galleries, stop by explorer Hamilton Hume’s home ‘Cooma Cottage’, a bushrangers grave in Binalong, a famous poet’s hangout in Bowning, an underground wonderland in Wee Jasper, or enjoy water sports on Lake Burrinjuck. Whatever your choice, you will leave wanting more.

Hilltops

Just over one hours' drive from Canberra is the Hilltops region, renowned for its glorious countryside, fascinating history and events such as the famous National Cherry Festival, usually held annually in the town of Young on the first weekend in December.

Upper Lachlan

Just over one hours' drive north of Canberra, with the town of Crookwell at its centre, is the region known as the Upper Lachlan.

A visit to the Upper Lachlan is not complete without stopping in at the remarkable and beautiful Wombeyan Caves. Featuring vast caverns adorned with striking and delicate formations, these caves are estimated to be between 400 and 430 million years old.

If cute and cuddly is more your style, drop in and see the furry friends at Alpaca Products Australia, a working Alpaca Farm where you get up close and personal with these extraordinary animals.
