Canberra’s surrounds deliver a refined drop

A wine wonderland

Canberra’s wine region, home to 140 vineyards and more than 30 cellar doors, is located within 35 minutes’ drive of Canberra, making it perfect for a weekend escape. With a focus on producing quality wines and maintaining a boutique look and feel, a visit to the wineries is a perfect way to spend an afternoon, or perhaps a weekend!

A wine region to explore

The Canberra District Wine Region has been creating distinct Australian wines for many years, receiving national regard and becoming among the top choices of connoisseurs around the world.

Believe it or not, winemaking in the region started 160 years ago. The 1970s saw a resurgence, pioneered by scientists who carefully researched the location of vineyards, grape selection and the use of traditional methods to produce low volume vintages to reflect the true nature of the variety, growing season and terroir (or 'character') of the wine. This set the scene for the thriving industry of today.

Other than the exciting flavours and aromas, you may even meet the actual winemaker when you visit their cellar doors for a tasting. Passionate and welcoming, they offer a wealth of knowledge about the local region, as well as the unique growing conditions and delicious blends.

Cool climate wines and regional terroir

The district's vineyards cover a large altitudinal range averaging from 300 to 800 metres. There’s also a distinct variation in temperature, vineyard elevations, and different soil types including granites and volcanics.

These elements, combined with the skills and character of the winemaker, reap varieties in styles such as Sangiovese, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Shiraz, Tempranillo and include rare varieties like Gruner Veltliner.

The ability to ripen the same fruit across the whole region provides great diversity within styles – so you may need to taste them all!
