Birds of Paradise: Ellis Rowan in New Guinea

Birds of Paradise: Ellis Rowan in New Guinea

Ellis Rowan (1848–1922) is one of Australia’s most celebrated artists. Best known for her striking wildflower paintings, Ellis Rowan also had an interest in birds and produced a stunning collection of New Guinea's Birds of Paradise (Paradisaeidae) in approximately 1917.

This must-see exhibition, curated by Dr Grace Blakeley-Carroll, showcases 13 of Ellis Rowan’s most exquisite watercolour paintings of Birds of Paradise, providing a glimpse into their complex mating rituals and elaborate courtship dances. Also on display are a selection of plate designs featuring smaller representations of the Birds of Paradise.
