Overview

The NFSA's Restores program brings two landmark Australian films back to the big screen in pristine digital restorations.

See The Sentimental Bloke (1919), Raymond Longford and Lottie Lyell's adaptation of C.J. Dennis' beloved verse novel. This silent-era hit follows Bill, a wayward Aussie, as he falls for Doreen, set against real Sydney locations like Manly Beach and Woolloomooloo. Restored for its centenary with a new score by ARIA Award-winner Paul Mac, it offers romance, temptation, and redemption, plus a vivid glimpse of Australia a century ago. Friends of the NFSA will introduce the film and host a post-screening Q&A.

Next, enjoy Jane Campion's debut feature, Sweetie (1989), returning in a new 4K restoration. This darkly comic drama follows Kay, whose carefully ordered life with boyfriend Louis unravels when her unpredictable sister Sweetie bursts back into the family home, dredging up deep tensions. Starring Karen Colston, the film is bold, unconventional, and emotionally charged. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Colston, whose career spans acting, producing, and writing across Australia, the UK, and the US.
