Overview
The NFSA's Wim Wenders Spotlight offers four landmark works from the acclaimed German filmmaker.
First up is Alice in the Cities (1973), which follows a disillusioned German journalist wandering America before being unexpectedly tasked with caring for a nine-year-old girl. Together, they embark on a poignant European road trip, captured in evocative black-and-white.
Later that evening is Paris, Texas (1984) screening on 35mm. This Palme d'Or winner stars Harry Dean Stanton as a drifter emerging from years in the desert to reconnect with his young son and search for the boy's mother, in a haunting meditation on alienation scored by Ry Cooder.
The following night, enjoy Tokyo-Ga (1985), presenting Wenders' personal journey through Japan in search of traces of legendary filmmaker Yasujirō Ozu. Combining interviews, observational footage, and cultural snapshots—from wax-food factories to rockabilly dancers—it's both homage and reflection on modern civilisation.
The program also includes Wings of Desire (1987) and is available as a 4-film Wim Wenders Spotlight pass.
