Overview
Somewhere on the east coast of Australia, summer, mid-1980s: four teenagers, including three brothers, drown on a lake. Thirty years later, with the lake now dry, a father and son make a visit. Soon, along with two lakeside residents, they are embroiled in an unimaginable commemoration – and unburden themselves of the truth.
A play with spoken-word songs and music, The Story of the Oars is a bold new Australian theatrical work about the repercussions of telling the truth. It's also an audacious exploration of Australian class, privilege, and the power of place to enchant, repel, and – ultimately – heal. The Story of the Oars is an evocative and intricate new theatrical work that dares to ask questions about the great but profoundly flawed Australian project.
A play with spoken-word songs by Nigel Featherstone. Music composed by Jay Cameron.
