Overview
Behind the View brings together Cassandra's personal experiences in the landscape in Canberra and surrounding NSW, and her inner world as an artist. Conceptually, the paintings are her reconstruction of the natural landscape, which invites the audience to consider how they view their surrounding world. Rather than pursuing a particular aesthetic across this collection, Cassandra has allowed her inspiration sources and personal expression to dictate the direction of the work. She describes this body of work as an evolution within her creative practice and an exciting breakthrough into abstract expressionism.
Cassandra felt very drawn to paint on a large scale and make colour the hero in some of the paintings by way of immersing the senses and sparking dialogue and appreciation for the wonder that is drawn from the natural world. Her intention is that the paintings in Behind the View are beautiful and expansive, drawing the viewer to take a closer look at the interesting gestural marks and bold textures.
"I hope that people feel drawn to a particular painting simply because 'they just love it'. Especially regarding abstract works, I don't believe you need to understand a painting to know that you like it."
Opening Night is at 6pm on Friday 17 October 2025.
