Make Your Own - Winter in the Woods Knitting Patterns

Updated 18 Jun 2026

Cool air requires warm clothing.

The team at the National Arboretum Canberra believe their collection of trees that span their 250-hectare site are no exception. This year, step into Winter in the Woods - a magical seasonal escape where nature warms the soul, even on the coldest days.

See the forests come alive with colour with Warm Trees. The popular annual installation adds vibrancy to winter and is made possible by the dedication of hundreds of volunteers who have knitted and crocheted colourful scarves and created themed decorations. Over 17 forests are featured this year and include Dairy Farmers Hill and even teeny tiny scarves in the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia.

Visitors are welcomed to take part in this magic with the below knitting patterns. Knitting has been proven to support wellbeing, where reward circuits and visible progress spark a reward circuit, releasing a sense of happiness.

Warm insides, warm outsides, happy visitors.

For beginners, here’s an easy scarf pattern.
