Five tips for staying warm at Canberra sporting matches during cooler months

Updated 31 Jul 2023

Stay warm during cooler months at your favourite sporting matches in Canberra

Chances are, if you’re paying a visit to Canberra during the cooler months to support your team, you’re going to be met with eyebrow raises and an empathetic shiver. But don’t let the cold keep you from experiencing the thrill of sporting victory! Here are some useful tips for staying warm at the next game, if cheering on your sports team doesn’t get you fired up enough.

East Hotel in Kingston is right around the corner from Manuka Oval, the premier venue for AFL and cricket in Canberra

Stay close to the venue

It might sound obvious, but you'll feel grateful to your past self for booking accommodation that's incredibly near to the sporting venue. Choose your spot to stay based on the ease of getting to-and-from the game. Canberra is incredibly easy to get around in, with only a short bus, Uber, or taxi ride away from most sporting venues, meaning you’ll have more time to focus on cheering on your team.

Rug up

Layer, layer, layer and you'll never feel the chill. Show your support by layering your beanie, scarf, jersey, and socks in your teams' colours for a win-win approach to avoiding the chilly breeze. (Literal) hot fashion tip: buy smart and get your teams' jersey in a size that will fit a shirt and jumper underneath.

Take a dance break

We’re big advocates for having a boogie during half time. Get the blood circulating through your extremities and bust out your finest water sprinkler, lawn mower and moon walk. Who knows, you might just make it to the big screen!

Cool down

After you've warmed up at the game, cool down and debrief at the nearest watering hole. If you're at GIO Stadium, nearby bars in the Inner North will be brimming with good vibes. Or for Inner South events there's always plenty of new haunts to explore for anything from cocktails to casual brews.

Check out the best live music bars in Canberra if you're after even more entertainment after the game, or get cosy at one of Canberra's well loved hidden bars. There's spot to suit every kind of tipple and mood.
