Free events worth planning around

Canberra’s events calendar is filled with free seasonal highlights that showcase the city’s creativity and charm. Time your trip to coincide with one of these memorable experiences.

Held annually in the National Triangle, Canberra’s iconic galleries and museums host an array of events during the day and become artworks at night during Enlighten Illuminations (27 February-9 March). Feast on tasty treats, and enjoy live music and exclusive experiences as you explore the National Triangle, transformed by thought-provoking architectural projections and artistic installations.

Make your way to Commonwealth Park for free entertainment at Symphony in the Park (8 March) featuring Mark Seymour from Hunters & Collectors and the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. Or wake up to surreal scenes as dozens of hot air balloons float across the capital each morning during the Canberra Balloon Spectacular (14-22 March). Grab breakfast from a local food truck or take to the lake to watch the balloons inflate and float into the sky.

Do not miss the Handmade Canberra Market (21-22 March) at Exhibition Park where more than 250 stalls showcase locally made gifts, gourmet treats and unique crafts.

For close encounters with native wildlife, explore Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. The sanctuary offers trails for all ages along with picnic areas and family‑friendly facilities. A little further on, Namadgi National Park features 160 kilometres of hiking tracks, abundant wildlife and significant First Nations and European heritage sites.

What to see

Canberra’s national attractions are rich in history, art, and culture, and most offer free entry.

Immerse yourself in Australian and internationally renowned artworks at the National Gallery of Australia. If you want to refresh your knowledge of Australia’s most defining moments, head on over to the National Museum of Australia, which is a sight to behold with its exterior alone. Both attractions have free entry to their general galleries, and your visit can be rounded off with a frothy cup of coffee at their on-site cafes or by having a stroll through their beautifully curated gift shops.

You can also visit other major attractions that boast free entry, like the Australian War Memorial, National Portrait Gallery, the National Library of Australia, and the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House. Tip: Hire a bike from the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre and explore the lakeside attractions at your own pace.

Discover Canberra’s public art scene with the Canberra City Art Trail, a self-guided walk that reveals iconic installations throughout the city. If you're in the south, the Tuggeranong Art Trail offers a fun, family-friendly experience designed especially for kids. With short drives and easy walking sections, it’s a great way to explore local artworks while enjoying time outdoors.

Within the same building, you find Canberra-famous Brodburger. Hailing from humble food-truck beginnings, Brodburger has cemented itself as one of Canberra’s greatest culinary prides and always dishes up a satisfying feed.
