Unique ways to experience the Canberra Balloon Spectacular

Updated 31 Jan 2025

Get up close and personal with one of Canberra’s most unforgettable events.

Wake up to the breathtaking sight of dozens of hot air balloons soaring over the capital each morning during the Canberra Balloon Spectacular (15-23 March), an event free for spectators. To catch the magical balloon inflations and launches, head to John Dunmore Lang Place in Parkes—the grassy area between Questacon and the National Portrait Gallery—from 6 am (weather permitting). Enjoy a delicious breakfast from the on-site food trucks while you’re there.

Alternatively, head to one of the many scenic vantage points around the city to watch the balloons drift across the sky. Or for something extra special, try one of these incredible ways of experiencing the event up close.

Hot Air Balloon Ride

For an unforgettable experience, take to the skies in your very own hot air balloon with Balloon Aloft Canberra. Passenger flights last around 45 minutes and end with a celebratory glass of champagne. Flights are priced from $445 per person on weekdays, or $495 per person on weekends (including Canberra Day, Monday). Advance bookings are essential.

Or book with Dawn Drifters, with a capacity to fly up to 42 passengers a day. Passengers drift with the gentle morning winds and enjoy an uninterrupted all-round view of Canberra from Parliament House to the Brindabellas.

2

Canberra Party Boat

For a unique vantage point, enjoy a delightful cruise on the Canberra Party Boat. With front-row views of the hot air balloons and the beauty of sunrise, this is an experience like no other. There are only 32 tickets available per cruise, so be sure to book early. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy the scenic national attractions best viewed from the water, offering a dual experience of both the balloons and iconic landmarks from a relaxed, water-based perspective.

3

Love Boat

Set sail on a premium self-drive electric Love Boat and glide across the serene waters of Lake Burley Griffin while enjoying the stunning sight of hot air balloons drifting overhead. Accommodating up to ten people, get comfy with wrap-around cushioned lounge seating, a Bluetooth stereo, and a built-in fridge. For those seeking something a little less hands-on, the Love Boat fleet also includes a newly renovated event vessel, offering a stylish, Hamptons-inspired ferry charter. With a capacity of up to 105 guests, it’s the perfect choice for groups looking to enjoy the spectacle in comfort and style.

GoBoat

Want to captain your own adventure? Hop aboard a GoBoat, an electric, eco-friendly self-drive boat, and take in the Balloon Spectacular from the water. It’s an entirely unique way to enjoy the event, as you’ll get to steer your own boat around Lake Burley Griffin, all while taking in the magnificent balloon displays. Don your captain’s hat, pack a breakfast spread and experience the event on your terms. No boating license is required, but bookings are essential.

Stand Up Paddle Board

For those looking for a more active way to take in the spectacular views, why not try Stand Up Paddleboarding? Glide silently across the water on a paddleboard, catching a beautiful sunrise over Lake Burley Griffin as the balloons float overhead. This is the perfect way to combine adventure, tranquillity, and the magic of the Balloon Spectacular in one seamless experience.
