Known as a 'city in a park', Canberra is a stunning canvas of autumn hues every year.
Canberra is one of the few Australian cities to fully embrace the beauty of all four seasons, and autumn is no exception. From mid-March to early May, the city’s trees undergo a breathtaking transformation, providing the perfect backdrop for nature lovers and photographers alike. Here are four must-visit locations to capture the beauty of Canberra in autumn.

Lake Burley Griffin
The central basin of Lake Burley Griffin bursts into colour every autumn, offering picturesque views in every direction. Follow the locals’ lead by strolling along the shoreline to fully immerse yourself in the seasonal change or rent an e-scooter or bike for a speedier journey. Take in the changing of the seasons from the water with a one-hour cruise of the lake or during a floating picnic on an electric boat available for hire from GoBoat or Love Boats.

National Arboretum Canberra
The National Arboretum Canberra is a treasure trove for nature enthusiasts, with 94 forests of rare, endangered and symbolic trees from Australia and around the world. This expansive space is the ideal spot to watch as the trees transform, with each species changing in its own unique way. Don’t miss the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia, where you can marvel at miniature trees that undergo their own remarkable autumnal shifts.

Mountain Lookouts
To experience autumn in Canberra from above, head to one of the city's mountain lookouts. The higher the vantage point, the more spectacular the view. Popular spots include Black Mountain, Mount Ainslie, and Red Hill which offer sweeping panoramic views of the city, framed by an ocean of golden and red leaves. Whether you choose to hike or drive to the summit, these lookouts provide some of the best photo opportunities during autumn.

From above
For the ultimate aerial perspective of Canberra in all its autumn glory, take to the skies. Balloon Aloft offers an unforgettable hot air balloon ride over the city, allowing you to capture the city’s vibrant colours from the air as sunrise bathes the landscape in soft pinks, purples, and golds. For an extra treat, end your flight with a traditional champagne breakfast at the Hyatt Hotel. Prefer a different aerial view? Take a scenic helicopter ride with Helicopter Corp, where you can experience Canberra’s autumn landscapes from a bird’s eye view, providing stunning perspectives of the city and surrounding region in full autumnal bloom.
