Ever wondered how your colleague, who has the same amount of annual leave as you, always seems to be on holiday? Chances are, they know how to make the most out of public holidays. In 2025, you too can maximise your time off with a few savvy leave hacks, turning public holidays into extended getaways. Plus, we’ve highlighted the best events in Canberra to enjoy while you’re taking time off.
National Public Holidays
Among the six national holidays, Easter, Christmas and New Year’s are perfect for converting a few days of annual leave into a full week off. By adding just a day or two of leave to these public holidays, you can enjoy an extended break in Canberra. For Victorians, the Enlighten Festival in autumn is an excellent time to visit, while those in New South Wales and Queensland will have plenty of time to explore Floriade in spring.
Australia Day 2025
24 – 27 January
Take one day off on 24 January for a four-day break.
Celebrate summer in style by sipping cocktails or enjoying a meal at one of Canberra’s top venues with a view, to truly take in the vistas of this beautiful capital city. Head to Pompeii at the National Museum of Australia. Step inside the heart of Pompeii in an extraordinary immersive experience combining soundscapes and surrounding projections with over 90 remarkable objects, including frescoes, jewellery, sculptures and pottery.
Across the Australia Day public holiday (26 January), you can enjoy the exciting, new, and one-of-a-kind event, FLIGHT: Drone SkyShow and Night Market. This free community event will take place over three nights (24 - 26 January) and bring together a SkyShow consisting of 600 drones, night markets, food and drink vendors, and roving live performers to the National Triangle.
Learn about First Nations’ culture and history, dating back more than 65,000 years, at the National Museum of Australia’s Talking Blak to History gallery. To be inspired by original, handcrafted arts and crafts by local Aboriginal artists, head to Burrunju Art Gallery and Aboriginal Dreamings Gallery.
Easter and ANZAC Day
17 – 27 April
Take three days of leave in April for a ten-day break.
With Anzac Day and Easter falling close to each other, you can enjoy an extended break without burning through too many leave days. Enjoy the National Folk Festival (17 – 21 April), featuring music, folk dance, and family-fun activities.
Before you head home, the ambitious athletes in your group can kick off April with a sweat at the Canberra Times Marathon Festival (11 – 13 April), with runs for all levels around the scenic National Triangle.
Spend your Anzac Day (25 April) paying your respects to those who have served, at the Australian War Memorial Anzac Day Dawn Service or by attending a daily Last Post Ceremony.
Don't miss the pre-game Anzac Day commemorations, before settling in for a Saturday night blockbuster, as the GWS Giants take on the Western Bulldogs (26 April) in what will shape up to be a critical clash at Manuka Oval. Get your rugby on as the ACT Brumbies face the Hurricanes in Round 11 of the Super Rugby Pacific competition at GIO Stadium (26 April). And keep your cheers going as the Canberra Raiders go up against the Dolphins (27 April). Not one to miss as the Dolphins make their very first appearance at GIO Stadium having joined the NRL in 2023.
Victorian 2025 public holidays
Labour Day (7 – 10 March)
Take one day off for a four-day break.
Celebrate the long weekend at the Enlighten Festival (28 February – 10 March) where Canberra’s galleries and museums will host an array of events during the day and become canvases for digital art at night.
Explore the vibrant works of two female artists, Ethel Carrick and Anne Danger at the National Gallery of Australia (until 27 April) and Joan Ross: Those trees came back to me in my dreams(until 27 April) a vibrant and dynamic exhibition by acclaimed contemporary artist Joan Ross at the National Portrait Gallery of Australia.
Melbourne Cup (1 – 4 November)
Take one day off on 3 November for a four-day weekend.
Take a moment to visit Cézanne to Giacometti: Highlights from Museum Berggruen / Neue Nationalgalerie (until 21 December) at the National Gallery of Australia which will be the first time works from this internationally significant collection will be seen in Australia. Wander next door to the National Portrait Gallery to see portraits of some of the people and artists who have shaped Australia’s identity.
New South Wales 2025 public holidays
King’s Birthday (7 – 9 June)
No leave required for a long weekend.
Mark the King’s Birthday (9 June) with festivities fit for royalty over this three-day weekend. Join talented dogs on a truffle hunt before enjoying a three-course meal and a fancy nights’ stay at Beltana Farm. Take the little ones skiing, without breaking the bank, at Corin Forest, where snowmen making competitions, snowball fights, toboggan rides, hot chocolates, and woodfired pizzas await you.
Labour Day (4 – 6 October)
No leave required for a long weekend.
Embrace spring with a day of leisurely walks, picnics, and live music at Canberra’s annual celebration of spring: Floriade (13 September – 12 October). Showcasing floral designs featuring more than one million blooms, this annual festival is better every year, and popular for its Instagram-worthy scenes, food trucks, market stalls, and horticulture workshops.
Queensland 2025 public holidays
Labour Day (3 – 5 May)
Long weekend, no leave required.
Enjoy a stress-free long weekend in Canberra filled with relaxation at Jindii Eco Spa and delicious food from the buzzing eat-streets of Braddon. Have a feed at Lazy Su or a nightcap at award-winning Volstead Repeal, and don’t forget to top off the evening with a scoop from Gelato Messina.
Connect with nature as you walk through forests of endangered trees and soak up the views of rolling hills at the National Arboretum Canberra. Or take in the sights from the Mount Ainslie Lookout, for one of the best vantage points of the capital city.
Royal Queensland Show (13 – 17 August)
Take two days off for five consecutive days off.
On the Royal Queensland Show Day (13 August) head to the National Portrait Gallery to see famous faces including royals, politicians, tv personalities, and athletes. This public holiday is only offered to those in the Brisbane region so head to Capital Brewing Co, Australia’s first carbon-neutral brewery, and raise a glass of craft beer to your regional mates who are working today. Why not spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the adjacent Dairy Road precinct, where you can find a gin distillery, art gallery, and bouldering gym?
King’s Birthday (4 – 6 October)
Long weekend, no leave required.
Make the most of the King's Birthday (6 October) at Floriade (13 September – 12 October), where more than one million blooms show off in Australia’s biggest celebration of spring. Indulge in of your long weekend with a visit to the Canberra District Wine Region, where you’ll find more the 40 wineries within a 35 minute drive of the city. This cool climate wine region is famed for their Riesling and shiraz but take the time to ask for recommendations at the cellar door you’re visiting – you might just find a new favourite.
Christmas and New Year 2025-26
20 December 2025 – 1 January 2026
Book six days of leave and get 13 consecutive days off.
The festive season in Canberra offers a wealth of activities and events. The city’s iconic museums and galleries remain open throughout the holidays (except Christmas Day), offering a chance to explore exhibitions, tours, and talks. Many attractions provide free entry to various exhibits making it a fantastic, budget-friendly summer activity.
For those wanting to enjoy the outdoors, catch a movie under the stars at Sunset Cinema (Nov – Feb) at the Australian National Botanic Gardens.
